Tips for Turning Your Backyard Into a Summer Destination

You’ll never want to leave your home once you follow these simple steps for turning your backyard into a summer oasis.

The last couple of months have certainly been bumpy for us all, so you can’t be faulted for letting all your grand home renovation plans fall by the wayside. Now that summer has arrived in full force, you’re probably wanting to escape into your backyard sanctuary on the hottest days of the year.

If you followed our spring cleaning tips article, your backyard likely only needs a few of these simple tips to transform your space into the peaceful hideaway you’ve been dreaming of!

How To Turn Your Backyard Into a Summer Oasis

Tip 1: Comfort is Key

It’s important for you to actually want to spend time in your backyard. No matter how beautiful your space is, the one thing that makes or breaks a space is furniture. For your backyard to become the space you deserve, furnish it with comfortable furniture you can relax on during the laziest summer days. Lounge chairs, porch swings and shaded seating areas are all great examples of items you can use to turn your backyard into a comfortable nook you can truly be proud of. Just make sure it’s sufficiently weather-proof and is made out of sturdy material that will hold up over several years.

Tip 2: Lights, Lights, Lights

Backyards aren’t only useful during the daytime. When renovating your space, make sure it can be used at all hours of the day and night. The best way to keep your summer party going all night long is by investing in some great outdoor lighting. Thinking of organizing some beautiful outdoor dinner parties? Create a nice ambience by ditching the ultra-bright fluorescent bulbs and replacing them with soft white bulbs.

Perfect weather for an open-air movie night? You’d want some lights you can dim during showings. If you’re not ready to invest in an entire backyard lighting system, a few strategically placed lamps should do the trick.

Tip 3: Create Space

Space is essential if you want to create a special haven where you can go to relax. A cramped area will make it difficult for you to move around and will stress you out far more than you’d think. When designing your backyard, the first thing to do is to make sure there’s enough space to move and relax. Even if you don’t intend to do much activity in this place, just having the open air and minimal clutter will reduce whatever stress you might be feeling and will be a welcome respite from the indoors where messes accumulate much faster.

Tip 4: Hello Amenities

View your backyard as an extension of your favourite room in your house. This means all the amenities you’d want in your favourite room should be available out there as well.

Love cooking? A basic outdoor kitchen means you can have the open-air dinners and peaceful outdoor breakfasts you’ve been dreaming of for years.

Is your family big on games? Why not build a game area that your family can gather around every week.

Are you a bookworm? Install bookshelves and reading nooks in your backyard.

Other unique backyard amenities include karaoke machines, outdoor projectors and even hot tubs.

Tip 5: Be Weather Ready

While backyards are best enjoyed when the weather is perfect, there are moments when it’s either too hot or the rain is threatening all your staycation plans.

We have a solution for those moments!

Adding a shade like a canopy or a deck umbrella not only improves the look of your backyard but also protects you and your family from the harsh effects of the sun, wind and rain. Installing a great drainage system will also protect your backyard from flooding on rainy days and will keep your outdoor area dry and mold free.
