5 Tips for Decorating Your Home's Exterior for the Holidays

The holidays are right around the corner, which means it's time to add a festive touch to your home's exterior.

We’re home exterior experts, so you can bet that we’ve already been dreaming of the many ways to decorate our home just in time for the holidays.

Decorating your home’s exterior doesn’t have to be complicated or extravagant. Adding a little holiday cheer can go a long way and is a great way to embrace the holiday spirit!

To get you started, here are five tips to spruce up your home’s exterior and bring in that Christmas cheer.

Tip #1: Light it Up

What are holiday decorations without lights?

Christmas or fairy lights bring life to otherwise inanimate decorations.

Don’t limit the lights to just the Christmas tree. Fairy lights are wonderful for lighting up paths in your front yard. Framing your front door with fairy lights also creates a warm and welcoming vibe that will lift your mood every time you come home.

Just make sure that you get lights that accentuate the tone of your door. If you find yourself with more lights than you need, you can wrap them around your trellis or foliage.

Tip #2: Add Santa’s Mailbox

A Santa mailbox is guaranteed to be a hit in the neighbourhood. It’s easy to set up this temporary decoration that kids can use to ‘mail’ their letters to the North Pole.

A great way to elevate the mailbox is to surround it with artifacts from the North Pole. Position ornaments of Santa and his little helpers around the mailbox to give it an authentic feel.

You can collaborate with families on your street as a great way to build friendships and community during the holidays.

Tip #3: Get an Outdoor Christmas Tree

Who says that Christmas trees have to stay indoors? Sure, you’ll probably want the gifts warm and dry inside the house but setting up an additional tree outside is a beautiful and grand way to ring in the holidays.

Deciding on a real or artificial tree depends on you; the real magic is how you decorate it.

Much like an indoor tree, there are no rules. Just make sure to use ornaments that can withstand the weather.

Tip #4: Don’t Forget Your Roof

With Santa coming down the chimney, you want to make sure he comes to the right house. Roof decorations give you a blank canvas to create whatever decorations you have in mind.

A classic theme for roof decorations is anything related to Santa and his reindeer. But just like the other aspects of your exterior decoration, there are no rules.

However, be sure your roof can withstand the decorations for a prolonged period.

Additionally, placing decorations on the roof can be tricky, so it’s best to do this with someone with experience working on roofs.

Tip #5: Add a Christmas Wreath

If you’re more into understated decorations, a simple Christmas wreath on your door is a great way to welcome the holiday season.

Most wreaths come with the classic green foliage, but white and red wreaths are becoming more popular.

Wreaths that compliment the colour and texture of your front door are stunning.

If you want to make this decoration more unique, you can dress your wreath up with a bow, small ornaments or even crafts made by your family.

Get Your Home Ready for The Holidays

Besides beautifying your home, decorating your home for the holidays gives you time to inspect your home’s exterior to ensure they’re in tip-top shape for the season. When you’re installing Santa Clause on the roof or installing lights, inspect your roof, siding, eavesdrops, windows and doors.

At Smart Home Improvement, we have windows and doors that look wonderful yearlong and genuinely shine during the holidays. We also have truly skilled staff who can give your roof a thorough sprucing, just in time for the holidays.
